Speechless about not being speechless!

One of the girls on our team is an elective mute, and whilst she promised to speak on the trip, and indeed did speak at the interview to get her a place in the first-off, according to her teachers, the build-up to the trip hasn’t shown any improvement in her frequency of speaking, or willingness to speak.

Until today, she has been very quiet, and only uttering words occasionally, preferring to speak through her close friend – the one person she will chat more freely to.

Today we have seen a change! Faced with a group of eager Indian children, all wanting to hear what she has to say, she fulfilled her promise and started speaking. It was a wonderful thing to see, and hear, and she even gave long answers during debrief rather than the shortest possible response.

Not only was it lovely to see the improvement in her, but it was also great to see the teachers speechless and glowing with delight at the transformation in this team member, who has been a cause of concern for so much time for them.

May this be the first of many positive impacts that we see in the team on this trip to India.
